Flint Lockwood

Flint Lockwood's Lab Coat is a sentimental item given to him by his mother, Fran Lockwood.

Appearance

Flint's lab coat is a long, white "professional-grade" coat with five buttons. As it has been worn consistently since childhood, it is made of a durable fabric designed to be machine-washable.

Though the lab coat was extremely oversized in Flint's youth, as an adult the coat perfectly aligns with safety standards for "lab coats that are long enough in both the sleeves and body to provide good coverage, but not so long that the coat could accidentally get caught on something or be dragged through a hazardous substance."[1]

History

Fran Lockwood Coat

Flint's lab coat was originally intended to be a birthday gift. However, after Flint's disastrous attempt to showcase his Spray-On Shoes at school, Fran decided to give Flint his gift early.

Wearing his lab coat is integral to Flint's invention ideas; without it, his ideas are uninspired, useless, or dangerous. In Coat of Harms, Flint had worn his coat for so long without washing it that it had become grungy and sticky with remnants of his prior experiments. Sam Sparks tried to dispose of the lab coat and give Flint a new, handmade one. Luckily, jealous inventor Hector Shelbourne had stolen Flint's coat from the trash. Sam and Flint convinced Hector to return the coat, and Sam discovered that Fran had left washing instructions in the pocket.

After Flint created the FLDSMDFR, the machine created a dangerous Spaghetti Twister that tore through the town during the Chewandswallow Grand Opening. In his attempts to stop the machine, the wind tore Flint's coat away, where Tim Lockwood found it hanging from a power line.

Tim reassured his son by telling him "when it rains, you put on a coat" and giving Flint his lab coat back. Inspired, Flint created the Flying Car II to fly up to the Meat-a-Roid to stop the FLDSMDFR.

After the FLDSMDFR was destroyed, Flint desperately wanted to earn the approval of his hero, Chester V, by earning the coveted orange vest of a Thinkquanaut. When his Celebrationator was set off by accident at the Live Corp Vesting Ceremony, Sam reassured Flint that "you can still make the world a better place without an orange vest" and the people that truly care about him thinks he looks great in his lab coat.
