Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 is an American 3D computer-animated comedy film produced by Sony Pictures Animation. The film is the sequel to the 2009 film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which was loosely based on Judi and Ron Barrett's book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. It was directed by Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn, produced by Kirk Bodyfelt, and executive produced by the directors of the first film, Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

The screenplay was written by John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein and Erica Rivinoja, and it is based on an original idea and (possibly) Pickles to Pittsburgh.

Scientifically Wonderful World of Science

Inventor Flint Lockwood and his friends had saved the world from the food storm created by the Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator (FLDSMDFR), but the world still needed to recover from the destruction wrought in the first film. Super-inventor Chester V, the CEO of Live Corp and Flint's childhood idol, offered his company's services to clean the island and helped to relocate the population to nearby San Franjose, California. In reality, the humanitarian aid was a cover for Operation Capture the Invention.

Chester personally invited Flint to work at Live Corp, and on his first day, Chester's assistant Barb explained to Flint that the coveted orange vest of a Thinkquanaut is bestowed upon Chester's chosen inventor in the yearly Live Corp Vesting Ceremony.

Despite Flint dutifully submitting inventions for six months, Flinty McCallahan was chosen to be the next Thinkquanaut. A disappointed Flint muttered there was "no reason to celebrate," accidentally alerting Steve to trigger his Celebrationator invention, which splattered paint on the audience and humiliated Flint in front of his hero - and, as he discovered on his morose walk home, on national television.

Meanwhile, back at the Live Corp auditorium, Barb informed Chester that she had lost contact with Search Teams X and Y, tasked with searching for the FLDSMDFR. Chester, proclaiming "we'll be all out of alphabet," realized that Flint's Celebrationator mishap made him the perfect expendable candidate.

CWAOMCharacters

Back at his apartment, both Tim Lockwood and Sam Sparks present Flint with vest-shaped cakes to celebrate his vesting, unaware of the disaster that had occurred. After Sam left, Tim tried to cheer his son up by offering to take Flint to the island to clean it up themselves. Their conversation was interrupted by Barb, who escorted Flint to Chester's office. Chester revealed that Swallow Falls was flourishing with sentient food created by the FLDSMDFR in the form of "foodimals," and that some were trying to swim from the island, potentially threatening the world. Chester tells Flint he needed to travel to the island, find the FLDSMDFR, and insert a special Bifurcating Systematic Universal Stop Button (BSUSB) into it to destroy it to end the threat. Though the mission was meant to be a secret, Flint invited his friends to help: his girlfriend, meteorologist Sam Sparks; her cameraman Manny; police officer Earl Devereaux; Steve, his pet monkey who communicates via a device on his chest; and "Chicken" Brent. He also begrudgingly accepted the help of Tim, his father, who took them to the island via his fishing boat. When Chester learned that Flint is not alone, he and his assistant Barb, a super-intelligent orangutan, soon follow, along with several Live Corp employees known as Sentinels of Safety.

Cheespider

To Flint and friends' awe and surprise, Swallow Falls was overgrown with foliage, creating a jungle-like environment. While exploring the island, they encountered numerous forms of foodimals, including a strawberry Sam affectionately named "Barry". When the gang was attacked by a Cheespider, Chester arrived in the nick of time to save them. When Chester and Barb threatened to harm Barry, Sam became suspicious of Chester's motives, as his claim that the foodimals were dangerous did not align with what Sam had observed on their journey. When confronted about this, Flint refused to accept Sam's statement, and she and the rest of Flint's friends left Flint with Chester. Flint's friends ran into a Cheespider again, but this time, since they were not considered a threat, the Cheespider was friendly and affectionate. Realizing Chester's nefarious intent, Sam tried to warn Flint, but was captured by the Live Corp employees and brought to the Live Corp factory.

RockCandyMountain

Flint, Barb and Chester located the FLDSMDFR in Big Rock Candy Mountain. As Flint was about to insert the BSUSB, the FLDSMDFR spawned Marshmallows, whose harmless nature gave Flint second thoughts about destroying the Foodimals. He refused to use the BSUSB, but Chester forced his hand, and with the device, is able to seize control of the FLDSMDFR. Chester launched Operation Slice and Dice then knocked Flint into a river, where he was rescued by marshmallows and reunited with Tim, who had befriended a tribe of Pickles. Without the FLDSMDFR, the foliage on the island shriveled, and Live Corp captured Foodimals with wanton abandon. Flint vowed to save the Foodimals, as well as rescue his captured friends, with the help of Barry.

Celebrate Holograms

Tim helped Flint and Barry sneak into the Live Corp factory. As Barry freed the Foodimals, Flint challenged Chester to turn over the FLDSMDFR. Chester threatened to use Flint's friends in his food bar processing machine if he refused to let Chester use the FLDSMDFR and spawned several holograms to distract Flint. Flint used the Celebrationator, with the help of Steve, to find the real Chester and free his friends. When Flint and his friends reunited, Chester tried to sneak away with the FLDSMDFR, but was stalled by the Foodimals. Barb also refused to help, fed up with how little respect Chester has shown to her. Chester tried to escape one last time but was eaten by a Cheespider. Flint recovered the FLDSMDFR, restored it to normal, and returned it to its home in Big Rock Candy Mountain, allowing the Foodimals to flourish naturally. He and his friends, including Barry and Barb, returned home, and Flint reconciled with Tim and tried out fishing for the first time.

With the FLDSMDFR restored, humans and Foodimals lived in harmony with each other, and multiple residents of Swallow Falls such as Mayor Shelbourne and Joe Towne returned to the island.

Barb worked up the courage to ask Steve on a date, misinterpreting his fascination with a banana sandwich as an invitation to dinner.

In February 2012, it was announced that the sequel would be titled Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers but was retitled Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. The film was originally scheduled for release on December 20, 2013, then pushed to February 7, 2014, before moving up to September 27, 2013. The music will be composed again by Mark Mothersbaugh.

And the Wild Scallions eating off the trees at night is similar to the scene with the Brachiosauruses eating off the trees at night. And the scene with Brent's stomach rumbling as the Tacodile approaches is similar to the water in the cups rumbling as the T-Rex approaches.
