Clouds are used as an artistic motif throughout the Cloudy series. The artists focused on depth, strength and volume over texture to emphasize the films' strong lighting and indicate emotional beats.
At the beginning of the film, the clouds were more naturalistic in shape and color, a reflection of the depressed state of the town. When the FLDSMDFR starts working, the clouds cleared to reveal blue skies, indicating the hope the town had for their future. They also took on more colorful and whimsical shapes.
But as the food storms worsened, the clouds look dark and ominous to add tension to the story. They also served to "mask the corrupt machine that hovers above, disseminating its light and presence while fueling its power".[1]
Trivia
- Sony Pictures ImageWorks's dynamic SVEA volume rendering software and ARNOLD lighting system were integral to the creation of the clouds in the first film.
